Designing with Artificial Skylighting : Applications, Performance, and Specification
Lightcore runs a dedicated CPD course on artificial skylight technology and circadian lighting design, written for architects, interior designers and lighting specifiers who want to understand the science and the specification detail before designing it in. Sessions run in-person at your practice or online for distributed teams, and typically take one hour including questions.
- Daylight and the human body
- How the 24-hour light cycle regulates sleep, mood, hormone production and alertness - and what happens in spaces built without daylight access.
- Measuring light that matters
- Spectral power distribution (SPD), colour rendering (CRI), colour temperature (CCT) and blue-light content; lux vs. Equivalent Melanopic Lux (EML), dimming and the 24-hour daily cycle, against WELL Building Standard thresholds.
- How artificial skylights work
- Rayleigh-scattering systems versus LED and precision micro-optic systems: what each technology can and cannot deliver in a real project.
- Specifying an artificial skylight
- Ceiling build-up and clearance, structural impact compared with a glazed roof penetration, mounting options, formats and multi-unit layouts, power, DALI (DT6/DT8) integration, control strategies and whole-of-life running and maintenance costs.
- Applications and case studies
- Worked examples across health, aged care, education and commercial environments - plus retail, workplace and residential - with the specification decisions behind each one.
- Getting it right on site
- Coordination with ceiling trades, certified installation, commissioning the daily cycle, product lifecycle and serviceability, and warranty considerations (5-year residential, 7-year commercial).
